I'm not a salesperson. I'm the office administrator at a 60-person equipment service company. Here's what you need to know: certainty is not a service add-on. It's the product. Shipping is the product. The material is the product. The date is the product.

A fast material primer for non-engineers
Engineers use abbreviations like they're texting each other, which means procurement people have to decode them. What does ABS stand for plastic? Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. HDPE—high-density polyethylene—is tougher in chemical and moisture environments, which is why it's often specified for HDPE plastic strips in washdown areas.
But ABS alone isn't a specification. There are dozens of grades. If a quote just says plastic part or ABS, ask for the data sheet. This applies beyond industrial parts too. We once ordered custom resin gifts for a client event (back in 2022). The pieces looked fine in the proof and terrible in person. The supplier met the deadline; they never said which resin, what finish, or how it would hold up at room temperature. - Your time spent chasing status updates
In our case, Vendor A's $900 quote turned into $900 for scrap, $1,250 for the expedited replacement, and a notional $7,400 in lost production. Bottom line: the cheap option was the most expensive one we bought all quarter.
When you shouldn't pay the premium
I don't want this to sound like every rush fee is worth it. If your lead time is six weeks and the part can sit at the dock for a week without hurting anything, the lower-cost vendor with decent reviews is a no-brainer. Guaranteed turnaround has value only when missing the deadline has a cost.
But when a delivery date is tied to a client penalty, a compliance deadline, or a production stoppage, the math flips. In those moments, probably on time is the biggest risk on the table.
And before you order, get the commitment in writing. A verbal we'll try is not a date. A date is a date.
